Riesling
Native to Germany, Riesling is an aromatic grape that is underrated and deserves its place in the limelight - not only because it is incredibly good value.
With its racy acidity Riesling can be crafted into wines that range from bone dry to very sweet. It is a fantastic food wine and incredibly versatile.
In New Zealand, Riesling is predominantly grown on the South Island which is ideally positioned with dry and cool long autumns and low humidity with great diurnal (day to night temperature) changes.
Riesling’s history in New Zealand can be traced back to the 1800’s, but it is really in the last 30-40 years that Riesling has been planted in larger quantities, it is now the fourth most popular white varietal!
New Zealand Rieslings come in various styles, but they generally are crisp and clean wines that compliment many different cuisines. Most New Zealand wineries make consistent Rieslings year after year, some even incorporate the International Riesling Scale on their back label to help guide customers as to the dry/sweet spectrum.
