Dog Point Vineyard
Ivan and Margaret Sutherland were some of the earliest Marlborough wine industry pioneers, planting grapes in the late 1970s. Ivan and his business partner, James Healy, formerly worked for Cloudy Bay. Sharing the same aspirations, they decided to launch Dog Point in 2004, using fruit from the 2002 vintage.
Dog Point is one of the oldest, privately established vineyards in Marlborough and is centrally located where the smaller Brancott and Omaka Valley’s meet. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown to produce low yielding bunches that are hand harvested. Since 2009 Dog Point has been certified organic, and owns and operates the largest certified BioGro vineyard in New Zealand!
Dog Point produces two different styles of Sauvignon Blanc - one that hits the benchmark for Marlborough style, herbaceous with tropical fruit notes, and “Section 94” which is a Fumé Blanc (barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc) that spends 18 months in seasoned French oak barrels that delivers a complex, chalky, acidic, herbaceous and full-bodied wine. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are also made by Dog Point.
