Tantalus Estate

Tantalus Estate produces small batches of premium Bordeaux and Rhone style reds.  

The vineyards that have eventually become Tantalus Estate were initially planted in 1998 with 3.7 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.   Additional vines were planted in 2002 and consisted of Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.  

In 2013 Campbell Aitken and Carrie Mendell saw potential in the picturesque site on Waiheke Island and purchased the 8.3 hectare property, establishing it as Tantalus Estate.  

Drawing inspiration from their hospitality and dining backgrounds, Campbell and Carrie also added a stunning restaurant and an onsite brewery, Alibi Brewery.  Embarking on a new challenge, and identifying that due to their neglected state some vines were not performing well, replanted with varieties more suited to the unique terroir of Waiheke Island’s Onetangi Valley, adding 0.9 hectare of Cabernet and Syrah.
